Electronic verification system (EVS)
The Electronic Verification System (EVS) is the Center for Medical Cannabis database used to manage medical cannabis applications for patients and providers. All patients must be registered in the EVS to participate in the program.
All users must create a Utah ID before registering for a medical cannabis card.

What is medical cannabis?
Medical cannabis is a treatment that uses the cannabis sativa plant to treat the symptoms for specific medical conditions, such as pain, seizures, or cancer. The cannabis plant contains hundreds of chemicals (called cannabinoids) that can help treat the symptoms of these medical conditions.
What medical conditions can I use medical cannabis for?
There are several medical conditions that you can use medical cannabis for in Utah. They include:
- acute pain for a condition such as surgery
- Alzheimer's disease
- amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
- autism
- cachexia
- cancer
- Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis
- epilepsy or seizures
- HIV or AIDS
- multiple sclerosis (MS) or muscle spasms
- nausea that’s not caused by pregnancy, cannabis-induced cyclical vomiting syndrome, or cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome.
- persistent pain that lasts longer than 2 weeks.
- post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that you’re also getting treatment for from a mental health provider.
- a rare condition or disease defined by the National Institutes of Health.
- a terminal illness or hospice care with a life expectancy of less than 6 months.
Your medical provider can submit a Compassionate Use Board (CUB) petition if you’d like to use medical cannabis as a treatment for another medical condition that’s not on this list.
Where can I buy medical cannabis?
You can buy medical cannabis at any licensed medical cannabis pharmacy in Utah. It’s illegal to buy cannabis in another state and bring it into Utah, even if you have a medical cannabis card.
What types of medical cannabis can I buy?
Medical cannabis pharmacies sell many different types of medical cannabis. These include products you take by mouth (such as tablets, gummies, and tinctures), inhale or vape (such as unprocessed flower and vape cartridges), apply to your skin (such as lotions or skin patches), or put in your vagina or rectum (such as suppositories).
How much medical cannabis can I buy at a time?
Your medical provider will give you a monthly limit in your EVS account. The highest limit is 113 grams of unprocessed flower and 20 grams of THC in all other products (such as tinctures, vapes, or gummies).
What are the laws for using medical cannabis?
You can find a list of all medical cannabis laws on the Utah medical cannabis law webpage. A few of the most important laws to follow when using medical cannabis include:
- Only use medical cannabis you’ve bought from a Utah medical cannabis pharmacy.
- Do not smoke cannabis (it’s legal to vape).
- Do not use medical cannabis in public (indoors and outdoors) unless it’s a medical emergency.
- Do not share, sell, or give away your medical cannabis.
